Cancer Research

ASTRO applauds Congress' long-standing support for biomedical research and appreciates the passage of the 21st Century Cures Act, particularly its increase in funding for cancer research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The additional funding and structural improvement will help discover ways to advance cancer treatment. This funding has played a role in every major innovation in the fight against cancer, including significant advances in radiation oncology and has led to a decline in the overall number of cancer deaths in the United States. However, despite many successes, additional progress in certain areas, including radiation oncology, has been hampered because funding has not kept pace. Currently, only 2.2 percent of NCI's budget represents radiation oncology awards.
